Signature HealthCARE of Rogersville recently participated in a ‘Veterans Stand Down’ event to help feed, clothe and provide medical services for homeless war veterans in East Tennessee.
The event was held at Munice Methodist Church Outreach Center for the Homeless in Johnson City, Tenn. SHC of Rogersville was joined by staff from several other Signature HealthCARE facilities in the area, along with Signature affiliate Silver Angels Home Care Specialists. Signature and Silver Angels also partnered with volunteers from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, East Tennessee State University, along with local branches of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the American Legion.
More than 170 veterans were directly served during the event, and 300 more box lunches were given out for homeless veterans who did not attend. In addition to meals and clothing, other services included: job and personal counseling, V.A. benefits awareness, haircuts and HIV testing. Sleeping bags, emergency supplies and sleep and survival kits for winter weather conditions also were given out.
“It was impressive how so many individuals, businesses and agencies pitched in to help care for our veterans who are in need,” said Silver Angels CEO Doug Hornsby. “It really showed the region’s ‘heart’ for the people.”
